Embryo Freezing

Any additional embryos created from an IVF cycle can be frozen and stored for future use. They can then be thawed and transferred if more than one treatment cycle is needed, without repeating a full stimulation cycle.

Services

What's involved

  • Embryos are grown in the laboratory for several days after fertilisation

  • Suitable unused embryos are frozen by vitrification, a rapid-freezing method

  • They're stored in the laboratory until you're ready to use them

  • For a transfer, an embryo is thawed and placed in the uterus in a short outpatient procedure

  • Your cycle is prepared beforehand so you are ready to receive the embryo

Storage arrangements and consent documentation are explained before embryos are frozen.

Who it's for:

  • Anyone going through IVF or ICSI with surplus viable embryos

  • Couples planning more than one child from a single egg collection

  • People whose transfer needs to be postponed for a medical reason

  • Those having genetic testing done on embryos before transfer
