Surgery may be required to further investigate or treat conditions making it difficult to conceive, such as endometriosis or fibroids, or to surgically retrieve sperm.

Common procedures

  • Laparoscopy — keyhole surgery to assess and treat endometriosis, adhesions and ovarian cysts

  • Hysteroscopy — a camera passed through the cervix to assess and treat polyps, fibroids, scar tissue and uterine septa

  • Tubal surgery — to assess, repair or remove blocked or severely damaged fallopian tubes

  • Ovarian cystectomy — removal of a cyst while preserving healthy ovarian tissue

  • Myomectomy — removal of fibroids affecting the uterine cavity

  • Surgical sperm retrieval — to collect sperm directly from the testes or epididymis

Most are day procedures under general anaesthetic, with a full recovery expected in days.
